Car hire in Shannon

Shannon is a small dormitory town on the edge of Limerick and home to Shannon Airport. Both take their name from the River Shannon, the longest in the British Isles. Located near the estuary of the river in County Clare, it makes a superb base to explore the beautiful west of Ireland.

What I need to know

There are several Shannon car hire firms, mostly operating at the airport terminal. Using the Holiday Autos tracker we can help you find the best car hire services in Shannon while offering 24-hour customer service and free cancellation. With no card fees, there is no better way to get your trip started.

Where to pick up my car

Because of its small size and proximity to Shannon Airport (SNN), all the local car hire will mostly be found at the airport. These are in the main Shannon Airport terminal and in the adjacent car park, at the southern end of the complex. Others are located a the Shannon Industrial Estate and in the town centre.

Car Hire Reviews Shannon

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Shannon itself offers some great coastal scenery, as well as the estuary and all its wildlife. River cruises can also be taken up the Shannon heading inland. For the most part, however, visitors will be heading for the cliffs of the west coast or towards nearby Limerick.

Nearby Shannon

Limerick is less than half an hour away and features King John's Castle, a magnificent 13th century fortress. The 15th century Bunratty Castle, which features the 19th century-themed Folk Park, is closer still and is the most popular day trip attraction in Ireland. The towering Cliffs of Moher are just under an hour away.

Longer drives

Most parts of Ireland are easy to reach. Dublin is two-and-a-half hours away by car, while Cork is an hour and 45 minutes. Ireland's highest mountains around Macgillycuddy's Reeks in County Kerry are about two hours away, the highest being Carrauntoohil.

Eating and drinking

Shannon and the Limerick area will provide plenty of chances to try out traditional Irish food and drink. Enjoy some tasty Irish stew with soda bread, and don't forget to have a glass of Guinness, Ireland's national drink. There will be plenty of Irish whiskeys to enjoy too.

Things to do

Shannon is a great base for exploring the Gaelic heritage of the west of Ireland. Try Lar na pairce (The Story of The Gaelic Games), just over an hour away beyond Limerick, or, driving a similar length of time northwards, enjoy the Aran islands, a bastion of Gaelic speaking.

Sightseeing

King John's Castle and Bunratty are not the only castle in the region. Don't miss Birr Castle Demesne with its wonderful botanic gardens being an hour and 20 minutes away. Natural wonders include the Aillwee Caves, less than an hour to the north, with their wonderful stalactites and stalagmites.
