Where to go

Knock is perhaps best well-known as the home of the Knock Shrine (more on that later), while the rest of County Mayo has some beautiful countryside, as well as towns and villages steeped in history. The Croagh Patrick, the sacred mountain of St Patrick, is a particular local highlight, with stunning views across nearby Clew Bay.

Nearby Knock

Westport House is just over 50 minutes from Knock. Built in the 1650, the exquisitely-decorated country house has more than 30 rooms on display to the public, while there's a pirate adventure park for children in its grounds. Meanwhile, Galway can be reached by car in just over an hour.

Longer drives

Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland, is around a three-hour drive from Knock. Here, you'll find historic attractions such as the medieval St Patrick's Cathedral alongside more modern additions like the Guinness Storehouse experience. If you want to venture to Northern Ireland, a four-hour drive will take you to Giant's Causeway, where the views will take your breath away.

Eating and drinking

There are many dishes native to Ireland. For an authentic dining experience, try traditional Irish stew served with colcannon (mashed potatoes with kale or cabbage) and soda bread for dunking in your gravy. And of course, you can't go to Ireland without enjoying a pint of Guinness.

Things to do

Drive from Knock to Newport, a journey which should take around an hour. Here, you'll find Rockfleet Castle, a tower house dating from the mid-16th century. It has a fascinating history, thanks to the role it played in the pirating adventures and colourful love life of local girl Grace O'Malley.

Sightseeing

The Knock Shrine is a sacred site for Roman Catholics, as it marks the spot where an apparition of the Virgin Mary, accompanied by St Joseph and St John the Evangelist, is reported to have taken place in 1879. Thousands of pilgrims now visit the site each year, which features a magnificent statue, as well as a visitor centre.
