Car hire at Derry Airport

Derry Airport (LDY) is a hub in Northern Ireland that is sometimes known as Eglinton Airport, due to its proximity to the small village. Driving into the city of Derry should not take more than 15 minutes when the traffic is good, however, as it lies just 13km away. The best route is via the A2, as it is most direct.

What I need to know

Derry Airport car rental is limited to just a few providers, making it all the more important to book your vehicle as early as possible. Compare car hire with the Holiday Autos’ site to ensure you get the best deal and the added benefits of no credit card fees and free cancellation.

Where to pick up my car

The car hire desks are to the left of the terminal in the arrivals area of Derry Airport, so you’ll be able to find them after reclaiming your baggage. From here, the staff will show you where your vehicle is parkedso you can get underway.

Car Hire Reviews Derry Airport

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Navigating your way around the city once you have sorted out your Derry Airport car hire isn’t difficult because it is essentially split in two. This is because of the natural topography of the River Foyle, with The Waterside and The Cityside separated by the stretch of water. There are three bridges that cross the Foyle, but most of the tourist attractions are found on the Cityside.

Nearby Derry Airport

Less than half an hour’s drive from Derry Airport and over the border into Ireland is Grianan of Aileach. This ancient stone fort is well worth a visit for its history, but also for the views out across the lush landscape, rivers and to the city of Derry itself.

Longer drives

It would be a shame to come to this part of the world and not make the trip to the Giant’s Causeway. You’ll be enchanted by the sight of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns and be awed by the fact that they were created by nature. There are a number of settlements along the coast worth stopping at to enjoy some fabled Northern Irish hospitality.

Eating and drinking

Local food from Derry tends to be hearty, so expect to be well-fed and get a warm, comforting feeling as a result. The city is home to two breweries – Northbound and Walled City – so look out for their beers for sale to get a taste of something local. As well as traditional Northern Irish food, Derry has various restaurants offering food from all over the world.

Things to do

Walking the city walls makes for a great activity, as Derry is home to some of the most complete defensive walls in Europe. For a fascinating insight into the history of Northern Ireland, explore Bogside, where you will find many murals commemorating key events from the Troubles. In this area, you will also find the Free Derry monument and Bloody Sunday memorial.

Sightseeing

When it comes to museums, Derry has just about every subject covered. You can spend your holidaylearning about everything from railways and the harbour to genealogy and Amelia Earhart. There’s also the Old Gaol and The People’s Gallery, which tells the story of the people who painted the Bogside murals.
