Car hire in India

Discovering India with a hire car is a great opportunity to experience everything this incredible destination has to offer. From the towering peaks of the Himalayas to the beaches on the Indian Ocean, the diverse landscape means there’s a state to suit everyone’s interests. Some of the world’s most iconic buildings can also be found in India, so take the time to marvel at the architecture.

What I need to know

Where to pick up my car

One of the things to take into consideration when booking your hire car is the pick-up location. India is a vast country and each car rental firm will offer its own places for collection. This could be one of the international airports, a city centre location or at a train station. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s convenient for you.

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

India varies hugely in all directions. To the north, you will find the Himalayas and the Taj Mahal; in thesouth, you can explore the backwaters of Kerala; you’ll find the Bay of Bengal in the east of the country; and in the west lies the beautiful beaches of Goa and the teeming city of Mumbai. If it is your first visit to India, then the capital, Delhi, also in the north is a must-visit destination.

Nearby India

When driving in India, be sure to stay on the left-hand side, apart from when overtaking, which should be done on the right. Take notice of local speed restrictions, as these are set by individual states. There is also the increased chance of animals, carts and rickshaws on the road that can throw up new challenges.

Longer drives

Since India is such a large country, it can take a relatively long time to drive between destinations, but with your hire car, you will have plenty of flexibility. You can expect to arrive in Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, in just over four hours after leaving Delhi. Meanwhile, the beaches of Goa are situated ten hours’ drive from Mumbai.

Eating and drinking

It will come as no surprise that the food in India is delicious, as it has become so popular that it is exported all over the world. You’ll find different dishes in the various states, with each area having its own specialities. Bengali food relies on five key spices, while the cuisine of Gujarat is largely vegetarian. Be sure to try the sweets if visiting Rajasthan, as they are the best in India.

Things to do

You may traditionally associate the Big Five with Africa, but India has its own fantastic array of wildlife. As well as birds, which are particularly spectacular, the Big Five you should be looking for are all cats. If you manage to spot the Bengal tiger, the Asiatic Lion, the snow leopard, the clouded leopard and the Indian leopard you are doing pretty well.#

Sightseeing

While there are plenty of sights to see all over the country, there are several that really shouldn’t be missed. The first is, of course, the incredible mausoleum known as the Taj Mahal, which you’ll find in Agra. Jaipur’s Palace of the Winds, with its intricate filigree work, will come a close second and Amritsar’s shining Golden Temple is third.
