Hiring a Car in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece and is the capital of Greek Macedonia. With a population of just over 300,000, the city is the country's second major economic, industrial, commercial and political centre. Known as a hub of colour and culture, Thessaloniki is renowned for its festivals and events, including the annual International Trade Fair and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, which take place against a backdrop of some of the country's most important ancient monuments.

With so much to offer, the city has a history for attracting tourists from all over the world. Its appeal is no less diminished today.

What you need to know

As it is one of the biggest cities in Greece, Thessaloniki is bustling with sights and attractions that will appeal to the tastes of even the most demanding traveller. While there are some strong public transport links, the best way in which to see everything it has to offer is to hire a car.

With a wide range of household names, Holiday Autos makes car rental simple, eliminating the endless forms, waivers and extras. There's just one price and one form. Even when you pick up your keys, we offer a free 24-hour contact centre, meaning we are always on hand to help you solve any problems.

Where to pick up your car

Thessaloniki International Airport (SKG) is the main gateway to not just the city, but also most of northern Greece. As a result, the airport handled just over 3.9 million passengers last year, making it the third-busiest airport in Greece.

If you book before your arrival, you can sign up to our meet and greet service, which will see you guided to our service desk by one of our representatives. A shuttle-bus service is also available with some deals. Otherwise, head to the main information desk located on the ground floor near the international arrivals area.

Where to go

Given its reputation for being one of Greece's most bustling cities, planning your visit to Thessaloniki will require a certain amount of thought. Without the stress of having to sort out how you are going to get yourself around this vibrant city, you are free to concentrate on deciding what you want to see.

Drive out to one of the local area's famous archeological sites, or experience some of Greece's most colourful and culturally-lively neighbourhoods in the whole of the Mediterranean.

Nearby Thessaloniki

Having the freedom of a car in Thessaloniki unlocks a number of possibilities for visitors, with the city surrounded by some of the most fascinating tourist attractions in the whole country. One of the most spectacular sites is Meteora, which is located in Thessaly, Central Greece, just over 215km away from Thessaloniki. The name of the area means “suspended in the air”, which refers to the monasteries dotted around the otherwise treacherous landscape.

Alternatively, head to the paradise of the Dragon Cave in Kastoria, the Neolithic settlement near the small village of Avgi or the Petrified Forest near the village of Nostimo.

Longer Drives

A destination that continues to be popular with many of the locals is Halkidiki, with the peninsula offering stunning scenery and crystal clear waters. Take some time to unwind with a drink on one of the many beach bars, sample some of the region's famous nightlife or soak up some sun on the various sandy beaches.

Visitors are often taken aback by the colourful landscape, which offers a sumptuous mixture of green and blue that will cement itself in the memory of any visitor.

This is a particularly good destination for families, with Halkidiki offering everything you need to spend quality time with the people you care about most. Combine that with the series of charming tavernas and accommodation options to suit every taste, and it is clear to see why it has become such a popular place to visit.

Top Attractions in Thessaloniki

The freedom that comes with being able to drive around in your own hire car means you can enjoy a whole variety of attractions and sights, catering to almost any taste.

The White Tower of Thessaloniki

The White Tower of Thessaloniki is both a monument and museum situated on the waterfront of the city. The present tower replaced an old fortification from the Byzantine era, which was mentioned as far back as the 12th century. The tower was a notorious prison and the scene of mass executions during the period of Ottoman rule. Since it was substantially remodelled and whitewashed in 1912, the tower has since been adopted as a symbol of the city.

Aristotelous Square

The main city square, Aristotelous Square is situated at the waterfront on Nikis avenue in the centre of the city. It was designed by French architect Ernest Hébrard in 1918, although many of the surrounding buildings have since been renovated. This is a perfect place to have a coffee and watch the world go by.

Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki

For those looking to get an insight into Thessaloniki's rich ancient history, the Archaeological Museum is a must see. It holds some important artifacts from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Not only are many of these pieces gathered from the city itself, but they have also been found in the region of Macedonia in general.
