Attracting as many as two million visitors a year, Rhodes is known to be one of Greece’s more popular islands - and with almost 300 days of sun recorded last year, it’s easy to see why. The island is home to a selection of historical sites, many white sandy beaches and a number of traditional villages and towns. Hiring a car to navigate around the island will allow you to see the numerous tourist attractions and interest spots including Rhodes Old Town, which is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe and a must-see for all tourists.

Nearby Rhodes

There are many beautiful towns and villages dotted along Rhodes’ coastline. Situated on the east-coast is Kolymbia, which is less touristy than the lively Falaraki, which is located a couple of kilometres south. Its beautiful white sandy beaches are Kolymbia’s main attraction, but if you’re looking for some delicious fresh seafood, the town's many restaurants are a great bet and will feature fish caught that very day.

Longer drives

Navigating your way round Rhodes couldn’t be easier, with the two major highways - Rhodes/Lindos and Rhodes/Kalithea - running from the bottom of the island, right to it’s tip. At 1412 square kilometres, Rhodes is one of larger islands in Greece, so if you want to get from one place to another quickly, these two main motorways are your best bet.

However, Rhodes’ best kept secrets are located away from these main roads, accessible only by smaller and windy routes, which take you to the island's many small villages and historical locations.

Lindos town is located slightly further afield than other resorts on the island but should be explored. Found on the east coast of Rhodes, this pretty village oozes a traditional Greek atmosphere. Once you arrive, its windy streets are difficult to drive around, so you will have to leave your car at the bottom of the hill. It is, however, Lindos’ tiny and twisted cobbled streets with whitewashed houses that make this town authentic and unique.

Rhodes Old Town

Surrounded by walls, Rhodes Old Town is the perfect place to embrace Greek heritage and get lost among Medieval Greek architecture with the town’s many winding streets. The old town is guarded by seven gates, one of which you will enter.

The town is split into three parts, first the northern part, which contains the stunning Palace of the Grand Master and Acropolis of the Knights, second the southern part, Hora, where you will find many bars, restaurants, cafes and shops. Thirdly, there is the Jewish Quarter, which is the least developed part of the town.

The Acropolis of Lindos

Some 55 km away from Rhodes town lies the Acropolis of Lindos, a centuries-old acropolis which sit at the top of rock overlooking the beautiful Lindos town. The acropolis demonstrates the island’s ancient past which was founded by the Dorians and led by the king of Rhodes, who arrived to the island in approximately the 10th century BC. The ruins of the acropolis will take you back to the history of the island as well as offering beautiful views over the island and Mediterranean Sea.

Afandou

Venture slightly further inland to south of the island’s capital and you will find the quaint village of Afandou, which is embodied by many hills and much greenery. In the heart of the village you will find a square surrounded by many taverns, restaurants and shops. For those who fancy a spot of golf, there is a course located on the outskirts of the village.
