Car Hire Reviews Gibraltar Airport

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Gibraltar has a total area of just 2.6 square miles, meaning it's surrounded by stunning Mediterranean beaches and ocean views on all sides and is very easy to navigate by car. Dominated by the great limestone Rock of Gibraltar, closer to sea level there are all kinds of caves and sandy alcoves crying out to be explored.

Nearby Gibraltar Airport

The Rock of Gibraltar is just a few minutes' drive from the airport and is home to a nature reserve featuring Europe's only wild monkey population of around 300 Barbary macaques. The medieval Moorish Castle is a 15-minute drive from the airport, while nearby St Andrew's Church provides a brilliant juxtaposition in the form of a traditional Scottish church in the Mediterranean.

Longer drives

The glamorous resort of Marbella is just an hour and 20 minutes' drive from Gibraltar Airport; keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of a superyacht in the harbour. Two hours, 45 minutes from the airport is Granada, situated at the bottom of the Sierra Nevada mountains and full of glorious medieval architecture. Meanwhile, just over three hours in the car will take you to Portugal.

Eating and drinking

Did you know that profiteroles are the national dish of Gibraltar? This means dessert will always be on the menu during your visit, while savoury dishes tend to be a fusion of British and Spanish flavours thanks to the territory's colourful history, with pasta dishes particularly popular.

Things to do

The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens are one of the country's main attractions, featuring flora and fauna ranging from Mediterranean olive trees to palm trees and from Dragon trees to giant daisies. There's also a statue of character Molly Bloom from James Joyce's Ulysses, and a classic red London telephone box, providing a nod to mainland British culture.

Sightseeing

Europa Point, the southernmost point of Gibraltar, offers some of the best views across the Mediterranean - you can even see as far as North Africa on a clear day. Home to a lighthouse as well as a 19th century fort, it is well worth taking a stroll around this part of the territory.
