The airport lies on the southern edge of the city.

Car Hire Reviews Stuttgart Airport

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Both Mercedes-Benz and Porsche have museums in Stuttgart, while those who enjoy a bit of nature can visit Wilhema, one of the largest zoological and botanical gardens in Europe. This lies close to the magnificent Rosenstein castle, which was built in the 19th century as a summer palace for King Wilhelm I of Württemberg.

Nearby Stuttgart Airport

Ludwigsburg is half an hour away on the other side of the city to the north, but it features some grand buildings, such as Ludwigsburg Palace, which contains its own museum and is adjacent to the Schloss Favorite, a magnificent Baroque hunting lodge. The nearby Monrepos Chateau is a fine lakeside building and winery.

Longer drives

The airport is well within reach of the beautiful Black Forest (around two hours' drive away). The French border cities of Strasbourg (SXB) and Colmar (CMR) are two and three hours away respectively, while the Bavarian capital Munich is a two-hour drive away.

Eating and drinking

Stuttgart is a great place to sample traditional German food and drink. While beer, large sausages and Schwarzwald kuchen (Black Forest gateau) are popular, the signature dish is actually Spatzle, which is vegetarian. The region also produces some fine wines, not least those that can be tasted at Monrepos.

Things to do

If visiting the zoo and the car museums is not enough fun, try a VFB Stuttgart football match, enjoy a performance in one of the city's many theatres and concert halls, explore the cosmos at the Carl Zeiss Planetarium, or go shopping around the magnificent Schlossplatz.

Sightseeing

Schillerplatz and the Old Town offer some classical German architecture, while those seeking a lofty vantage point should head for the 40-metre high Killesberg Tower. Alternatively, see the sepulchral chapel on Wurttemberg Hill, the 19th century tomb of Queen Katharina, which offers a spectacular view over the city and the Neckar Valley.
