Hiring a car in Frankfurt

The fifth largest city in Germany, Frankfurt has established itself as a global hub for commerce, culture, education, tourism and traffic, and is also the most important financial centre in Europe.

The European Central Bank, German Federal Bank, Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, DZ Bank, KfW, are just some of the world-famous names to call this city home.

But this city is more than just a financial and commercial powerhouse, playing host to many cultural and educational institutions, some of which have had a substantial impact on the country's overall identity.

It is therefore perhaps no surprise that Frankfurt is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany

What you need to know

Frankfurt is well serviced by a number of roads both leading in and out of the city, as well as within the local area. Rush-hour traffic can sometimes prove a problem, so always bear that in mind when planning your trip.

With its reputation for being quite crowded, many visitors opt to take advantage of the city's impressive park-and-ride system.

Nevertheless, hiring a rental car is the best way to enjoy the freedom needed to experience all that Frankfurt has to offer. At Holiday Autos [/] we have a wide range of big names in car rental. There's just one form to fill in and one price to pay, with no hidden fees. Even if you experience any problems during your travels, our 24-hour contact centre will help solve any issues.

Where to pick up your car

Because of its commercial and cultural importance to the rest of the country, Frankfurt is often compared to New York. Like the Big Apple, Frankfurt is served by more than one airport.

The main aviation hub is Frankfurt International FRA, which is the fourth busiest airport in Europe, and handles a large majority of visitors to the city.

If you book before your arrival, simply head over to our desk inside the terminal and pick up your keys. Flying to Frankfurt Hahn HHN? No problem, our team is on hand here too. Head over to our desk at the airport terminal and you can get started.

If you prefer, it is also possible to pick up your hire car at Frankfurt Central railway station, giving you opportunity to pick up your keys from a location that suits you and your needs.

Where to go

Given that there is so much to see and experience in Frankfurt, planning a trip here will create a great deal of thought. While the city boasts a very impressive public transport network, the freedom of having your own rental car helps take the stress away from deciding how best to get around.

Having a car also means you are free to explore some of the surrounding towns and areas, meaning there is plenty for visitors to explore.

Nearby Frankfurt

The city of Mainz is just over half an hour away from Frankfurt, and has been home to settlements for over 300,000 years, although the influence of the Romans is arguably the strongest on the town. Famous sights include the local cathedral and Theodor Heuss Rhine Bridge, while the local speciality cheeses are among the most treasured in the region.

To get to Mainz, take the B44 out of Frankfurt before turning right onto the A3, then the A67 and the A60. Head right at the B40 and follow the signs for Mainz.

Literary fans will love a trip to nearby Darmstadt, with the town's Castle Frankenstein though to have inspired Mary Shelley's iconic novel of the same name. Other interesting attractions include the Ducal Palace, Luisenplatz and a 19th century English-style rose garden.

Longer drives

With over 300 drinking establishments and one of the most lively party scenes in Germany, the town of Heidelberg is hugely popular with visitors - just make sure you book a hotel before heading to the bars. But while a great city for those looking for a vibrant night out, it is also a hugely interesting place for those with an interest in history as the town is largely untouched since the days of World War Two, meaning it has kept many of its baroque architecture.

To get here, take the A5 south and turn off at exit 37 before following the signs. Overall, the journey is around an hour.

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life, you would do worse than to visit the Taunus mountains, which boast wide open spaces, stunning rivers and beautiful vineyards.

Top attractions to see in Frankfurt

The freedom of being able to drive around in your very own hire car means you can enjoy everything this great city has to offer without having to worry about transport issues.

The Romerberg

This beautiful historic square sits in the old part of the town and features a number of restored buildings that originally date back to the 14th and 15th century. Sitting in the middle of the square is the Font of Justice, a fountain that in 1612 flowed with wine. It's worth bearing in mind that access for cars can be limited so it's advisable to park at the Parkhaus Kaiserplatz by the Willy-Brandt-Platz station.

Goethe House

Fans of literature are likely to enjoy the house where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, widely regarded as one of Germany's most famous writers and poets, lived and worked. Goethe's work, which was often emotional and heartfelt, is respected all over the world.

St Bartholomew's Cathedral

This striking gothic church was initially destroyed during the World War Two bombings, but has since been expertly rebuilt. One of the most popular attractions in this city, it is easy to see just why this wonderful piece of architecture was so important to the locals.
