Where to pick up your car

Where to go

Given that there is so much to see and experience in Frankfurt, planning a trip here will create a great deal of thought. While the city boasts a very impressive public transport network, the freedom of having your own rental car helps take the stress away from deciding how best to get around.

Nearby Frankfurt

The city of Mainz is just over half an hour away from Frankfurt, and has been home to settlements for over 300,000 years, although the influence of the Romans is arguably the strongest on the town. Famous sights include the local cathedral and Theodor Heuss Rhine Bridge, while the local speciality cheeses are among the most treasured in the region.

To get to Mainz, take the B44 out of Frankfurt before turning right onto the A3, then the A67 and the A60. Head right at the B40 and follow the signs for Mainz.

Literary fans will love a trip to nearby Darmstadt, with the town's Castle Frankenstein though to have inspired Mary Shelley's iconic novel of the same name. Other interesting attractions include the Ducal Palace, Luisenplatz and a 19th century English-style rose garden.

Longer drives

With over 300 drinking establishments and one of the most lively party scenes in Germany, the town of Heidelberg is hugely popular with visitors - just make sure you book a hotel before heading to the bars. But while a great city for those looking for a vibrant night out, it is also a hugely interesting place for those with an interest in history as the town is largely untouched since the days of World War Two, meaning it has kept many of its baroque architecture.

To get here, take the A5 south and turn off at exit 37 before following the signs. Overall, the journey is around an hour.

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life, you would do worse than to visit the Taunus mountains, which boast wide open spaces, stunning rivers and beautiful vineyards.

Fans of literature are likely to enjoy the house where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, widely regarded as one of Germany's most famous writers and poets, lived and worked. Goethe's work, which was often emotional and heartfelt, is respected all over the world.

St Bartholomew's Cathedral

This striking gothic church was initially destroyed during the World War Two bombings, but has since been expertly rebuilt. One of the most popular attractions in this city, it is easy to see just why this wonderful piece of architecture was so important to the locals.
