Toulouse is a centre of traditional French food, from foie gras to pastries and, of course, plenty of wine. The region itself is famous for its sausages, which are usually made from diced pork, smoked bacon and flavoured with garlic and wine. You will often find these in a sausage casserole, called a cassoulet.

Things to do

Dining is at the heart of Toulouse, and tourists can take in the region's many delicacies with a food and drink tour. These typically take you around markets, restaurants and even vineyards to see produce being created, and you will have plenty of time to sample the many offerings!

Another popular activity is to visit one of the city's many museums. There's art in the Musee des Augustins, animals and plants at the Museum of Natural History, and plenty of exhibits about space in the Cite del'Espace.

Sightseeing

The historic city has plenty to offer, in particular its selection of beautiful religious buildings. The Basilique Saint Sernin, for example, is an absolute treasure. Built on the site of an 11th century bishop's grave, the basilica has grown outwards to become a sprawling architectural marvel complete with a crypt.

Another option is the Church of Les Jacobins. This medieval marvel was an important site in the French Revolution, when it was used as a barracks and stables. For a more grandiose experience, you could visit the Cathedrale St-Etienne, an unusual building constructed in two different time periods.

Surprisingly, one of the best things to do in Toulouse is visit the bridges. The Pont Neuf in particular is beautiful, and an incredibly popular tourist spot for good reason.
