Where to go

Montpellier - France’s eighth largest city - is under half an hour’s drive from the airport. It has been described as a graceful, stylish and easy-going metropolis with stately boulevards lined by elegant buildings.

It may not be the biggest city you’ll ever visit but Montpellier manages to squeeze a lot in, from a zoo and aquarium to lush gardens, fascinating museums and gorgeous white sand beaches right on its doorstep.

Just under an hour north-east of Montpellier Airport is the city of Nîmes, which sits between the Mediterranean Sea and the Cévennes mountains and boasts one of the warmest climates in all of France.

Meanwhile, Sète, a fishing port town that is surrounded by water, lies some 40 km down the coast from the airport.

Longer drives

Heading east, the city of Marseilleis just over two hours’ drive away, while driving for an hour west along the southern French coast will bring you to the old town of Béziers, which is known for the Feria de Béziers, an annual bullfighting festival.

You can actually drive over the border into Spainwithin two hours too, with Girona reachable within 40 minutes of entering the country.

Eating and drinking

If you venture down Montpellier’s narrow streets, you’ll encounter many charming restaurants, serving quality French cuisine. One dish to look for is aligot, which consists of melted mountain cheese, creamed spuds and garlic.

The city’s wine bars are a great place to enjoy the best crus of Languedoc-Roussillon around a plate of tapas.

Things to do

There’s plenty to get up to in Montpellier itself. You could visit the gaspworthy Planetarium Galilee, relax in one of Place de la Comedie’s many bars and restaurants or one of its many museums such as the wonderful Musee Fabre, Le Pavillon Populaire and Carre Sainte-Anne.

Take a stroll through the Chateau de l’Engarran and Jardin des Plantes or take the family to Parc Zoologique Henri de Lunaret.

Sightseeing

Cathedrale St-Pierre features some amazing architecture that has to be seen in person to really appreciate. The same could be said for the Porte du Peyrou, Aquadukt Saint Clement, Esplanade d’Europe and Place de la Canourgue, which is deemed by many as the calmest spot in Montpellier.
