Where to pick up your car

Nearby Grenoble

Grenoble is close to a number of areas of interest, including the magnificent Château de Vizille. Just over 20km away via the A480 and N85, the château is set in idyllic grounds and is sure to take your breath away. Built between 1611 and 1627, the château is incredibly beautiful but also has an interesting history, including being the site where the initial plans for the French Revolution were laid.

If you feel like braving the narrow country roads around Grenoble, drive 27km via the D512 to reach Parc Naturel Régional de Chartreuse. The park offers a wonderful retreat where you can simply wander around and bask in the beauty of the region. If you visit during summer, enjoy some great hikes, but in winter, make sure to take your skis along. You'll also find some hidden gems in the form of traditional inns that serve amazing cuisine in some of the tiny alpine towns.

Longer drives

Staying in Grenoble means that it isn't a long drive to see a fairytale come to life in the form of Annecy. This gorgeous alpine town features a green lake and is surrounded by mountains, giving it an atmosphere that is all its own. With a Medieval quarter, cobblestone streets and houses bedecked in bold geraniums, just walking around will give you plenty to see. You can drive to Annecy in just over an hour via the A41 toll road.

You're also close to the spa town of Aix-les-Bains, which is located by Lake Bourget. This town has achieved international fame for its spas and peaceful atmosphere, making it the ideal location if you want a relaxing day. With natural springs that have been in use since the Roman times, you can take in Aix-les-Bains' history while having a treatment or two.

Musée de Grenoble

The Musée de Grenoble is one of the best museums in all of France, providing you with the chance to look at an amazing selection of fine art. Set in the centre of a beautiful park, the museum offers you 18,000ms of exhibition space to explore. This includes Medieval art right through to paintings of the 20th century. You'll find pieces by some of the most well-known names here so it is a good idea to take a day to explore.

Fort de la Bastille

You won't get views of Grenoble any better than those you can see at Fort de la Bastille. You reach the fort by jumping on the Téléphérique de la Bastille cable car from Quai Stéphane-Jay. This will allow you to take in the spectacular views before you even arrive at the fort. Once you step off the car, you can enjoy the museums located in the former prison or sign up for some fun mountaineering activities.

Jardin des Dauphins

The most beautiful green space in the whole of Grenoble, Jardin des Dauphins lies just below the Fort de la Bastille. Here you'll find 30 hectares of garden, which was created on the site of the old fortifications of Grenoble. It doesn't matter what time of year you visit as the garden is truly atmospheric in every season.
