Where to go

Bergerac is a beautiful place, surrounded by green fields and vineyards, which will have you hooked on the location the moment your plane touches down. You can explore the city and its light-coloured buildings or head further afield into the Dordogne. The region is best-known for its great wine and Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac, both of which you can learn more about. When you want to take a break from exploring, head to any one of the lively cafes for great food and drink.

Bergerac Airport is quite close to a number of interesting attractions, including Chateau de Bridoire. The Bridoire Castle is just a 15-minute drive from the airport via the D933. Built in the 15th century, the castle can be found in the middle of the Monbazillac vineyards, offering great views and a quiet atmosphere. It features a range of restored rooms in the style of the late 19th century, giving you insight into how the Marquis de Foucauld lived. As well as history, you can also play some games and try your hand at activities like archery, all of which take place in the inner courtyard.

For a great family day out, simply drive the 6km down the D936E1 from the airport to Junior Land Park. Open during the summer months, the park offers the perfect way to spend a hot day. It has four pools and a large waterslide, as well as activities like go-karts and bowling. Adults can relax in the jacuzzi and soak up the sun.

Longer drives

Landing at Bergerac Airport means you are within driving distance of a number of other towns and cities that are worth a visit, one of these is Bordeaux, which is an hour and a half away via the A89 and toll roads. The formerly-sleepy city has had a revamp in recent years, which has led to half of it being Unesco-listed. There are so many historical sites to visit and plenty to do, making it worth the drive.

You may also want to drive the hour and a half via the N21 and A89 to Brive-la-Gaillarde.This is the place to go if you like a spot of shopping, as its weekly markets draw people from all around the world. Explore the different layers of the town, from its busy outskirts to the beautiful golden sandstone that the inner village is built from.

The area is known for its wine, so you definitely need to try a cheeky tipple or two during your visit. Things to do

Don't be put off by the size of Bergerac compared to other popular areas in France, as there is actually plenty to do. If you want a break from exploring by car, take a boat trip down the Dordogne. Traditional flat-bottomed boats offer regular tours, allowing you to appreciate the scenery and the area's history at a slow pace.

You can also drive to Sarlat for a day trip, which is a town full of character. With Medieval architecture and a sleepy feel, this is a great choice for a relaxing day trip.

Sightseeing

To really get a taste of Bergerac, you just need to walk around the town's well-maintained Medieval streets. They have retained their ancient appearance and you'll notice a lot of touches that will make you feel as though you've gone back in time.

It is worth visiting the Recollets Convent, which has been used as a convent, Protestant temple and is now the Wine Museum of Bergerac. Built in the 12th and 17th centuries, the building has a very old world feel. You can enjoy learning about wine in the ancient structure and also enjoy a taste of some of what the region has to offer.
