Car hire in Cyprus

Hiring a car in Cyprus

There are lots of great car companies in Cyprus including Thrifty, Hertz, and Enterprise.

Cyprus is a popular holiday destination in Europe, and the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean.

The most popular areas of this stunning island tend to be Ayia Napa, among younger tourists, as well as Paphos and Larnaca.

All of these destinations cater heavily for tourists, with some focused more on families, while other areas are much more suited to the 18 to 30 audience.

What you need to know

With so many options in such a wide number of locations, you'll find that our booking engine will help you to find the most competitive prices for your needs.

In addition, you can be reassured by the 24/7 support available and the option to make amendments or cancel free of charge.

Where to pick up your car

Cyprus has a variety of options for car hire across the entire country, with collection available at Paphos airport (PFO), Larnaca airport (LCA) and Nicosia airport (NIC).

Where to go

Cyprus has a huge number of destinations that you won't want to miss, although you'll struggle to visit them all in one trip.

In the south-west is Paphos, one of Cyprus' most popular tourist destinations, which boasts stunning beaches and beautiful historical architecture. Further along the coast you'll find Limassol, a cosmopolitan city that has almost everything a tourist could dream of.

In the south-east are Larnaca and Ayia Napa, two destinations that are well-known for their nightlife.

Poli in the north-west is a small town on the outskirts of the Akamas peninsula nature reserve. This is a much quieter destination, with many rural areas to explore.

Driving in Cyprus

In Cyprus you drive on the left hand side of the road.

Motorways have a maximum speed limit of 100km/h and a minimum limit of 65km/h. The speed limit in urban areas is 50km/h, on country roads is 65km/h and the national speed limit is 80km/h.

All of the roads in Cyprus are toll-free, meaning you can take any route and not worry about having to pay.

In some areas you'll find that the rules of the road are adhered to less strictly than in the UK, so it pays to stay aware at all times. However, rules surrounding drink driving are much stricter and the legal limit is much lower, so we would advise drivers to refrain from drinking even one alcoholic beverage if they plan to get behind the wheel that day.

Longer drives

There are plenty of places that you can visit in Cyprus, and since the island is relatively small, you can reach anywhere within just a few hours.

Near the centre of the Mesaoria plain on the banks of the River Pedieos is Nicosia, the largest city on the island. Here you can see the history of many different empires, dating back to the Bronze Age.

If you're driving along the border between Thessaly and Macedonia you can see Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece and the second highest mountain in the Balkans.

Alternatively, why not drive from Paphos to Larnaca and take in the beautiful coastline that Cyprus has to offer?

Top attractions to visit in Cyprus

Cyprus has so many stunning destinations, with different cultures for visitors to immerse themselves in and enjoy. It's not possible to visit them all during one trip, but by exploring the different locations you can experience all that Cyprus has to offer.

Paphos

Paphos is filled with stunning places to visit, and it's particularly popular for its historical architecture. See the history of Cyprus when you visit Kato Paphos Archaeological Park or Ayios Neophytos Monastery.

You can tour the area on horseback if you head up to Eagle Mountain Ranch, or why not go on a boat tour and see the sea life surrounding the island?

If you're visiting with the family, then you won't want to miss out on a trip to the local waterpark, which has a great variety of slides, as well as dedicated areas for younger children.

Larnaca

If you're visiting Larnaca then you won't want to miss out on the beaches, which are arguably some of the most beautiful on the island of Cyprus.

In the village of Mazotos just 15 minutes away you can enjoy a camel ride and tour of the village.

To really take in the culture of the area though, head to the Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement, one of the best-preserved historic sites of the eastern Mediterranean. The ruins date back to 7000 BC, and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1998.

Poli

Sitting at the centre of Chrysochous Bay and on the edge of the Akamas peninsula nature reserve, Poli is an area of beauty.

Undoubtedly, the one place in Poli that you can't miss is the Baths of Aphrodite. Legend says that after swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Bay, Aphrodite used to bathe in this pond. From here you get stunning views across the Bay, surrounded by wildflowers and stunning landscape.

The area is so beautiful that it is often considered to be the best kept secret of Cyprus.
