Calgary International Airport (YYC) is located around 17 km northeast of downtown Calgary, and serves the Canadian province of Alberta, including Calgary itself, and the surrounding region.

The AB-2 is the main highway connecting the airport to the centre of Calgary.

Where to go

Heading to downtown Calgary is a very good idea. Here, you’ll find an eclectic range of restaurants, bars and shops. However, you don’t need to venture too far out to experience Canada’s amazing raw wildlife and nature at Nose Hill Park or along the Bow River.

If heading downtown or into the wild isn’t your thing, there are many quaint and peaceful towns for you to explore within an hour’s drive of Calgary Airport, such as Airdrie, Olds, Okotoks, High River and Drumheller, as well as Red Deer - Alberta’s third most populated city.

Longer drives

About 80 minutes west of Calgary Airport is Banff National Park, Canada’s oldest national park, spanning 6,641 sq km and offering amazing mountain scenery in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

Just under three hours north is Edmonton, the capital city of the Alberta province, with its beautiful William Hawrelak Park.

Meanwhile, driving 330 km and almost four hours south is the 1,349 sq km Glacier National Park.

Eating and drinking

As you’d expect, most of Calgary’s finest eateries are located downtown, south of the Bow River, but if you’re after something more rurally located, you’ll find some great spots just off the 1A not too far from Nose Hill Park.

Things to do

Canada, especially nearby Banff, is well-known for its bears, but don’t approach them expecting a warm cuddle, they can be deadly and should be avoided.

Much safer pastimes would be to go and watch the Calgary Flames hockey team at the Scotiabank Saddledome or visit one of Calgary’s many attractions such as Fort Calgary, Eau Claire Smokestack or The Military Museums.

Sightseeing

We’ve already mentioned some of the amazing national parks near Calgary, but you don’t need to drive for hours to soak up some of Canada’s best sights. The Calgary Stampede is one of the world’s most popular rodeos and takes place for 10 days every July. Meanwhile, Fish Creek Provincial Park is just south of downtown.
