There is so much to see in Vienna that any visit here will require plenty of planning. By eliminating the stress of negotiating your way through the city's public transport system, it becomes easier to simply focus on what you want to see.

Nearby Vienna

If you enjoy skiing then there are several high-profile resorts that are well worth a visit, including Lilienfeld, which hosted the first ever slalom race back in 1905, making it one of the most important resorts of its kind in Austria.

With your hire car simply follow the A1 before taking the 59-Sankt Pölten Süd exit, which will allow you to merge onto the B20. From there you should see signs for the resort, which despite its remote atmosphere is a just one hour away from the city.

Alternatively, there is the Annaberg resort, which being two hours away from Vienna Airport is somewhat quieter.

Longer drives

The Slovakian capital of Bratislava is a hugely popular day trip with locals and tourists alike, offering a number of fantastic museums, plazas and fine architecture that all contribute to fantastic day out.

To get to this up-and-coming city, simply follow the A4 and continue onto the A6, before heading onto Route 2 to follow signs for Bratislava. The whole journey takes around an hour.

Another popular destination is Salzburg, which is situated on the German border and is known as the birthplace of Mozart, while also providing the backdrop for the popular film, 'The Sound of Music'.

Visitors can learn how to conduct an orchestra, or hear the world through the ears of an unborn child, all within the confines of a former royal palace.
