Many people visiting Australia like to take an extended holiday so they have plenty of time to enjoy the country. Australia is the sixth largest country in the world so isn’t somewhere that could be totally explored in just two weeks.

As well as Perth, Australia has many highlights including the world-famous Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Great Barrier Reef, Bondi Beach and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

Other options include visiting New Norcia - a Benedictine monastery town that has some impressive Spanish architecture, a museum and art gallery - perfect for a day out.

Longer drives

Driving between Australia’s major cities is quite the undertaking given the distances involved. However, if you have the time then embarking on an Australian road trip is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

One of the highlights is the Great Ocean Road (B100) which is one of the country’s most breathtaking drives. Anyone making the journey could be treated to some stunning sights including koalas, rainforest trees and great ocean views.

The road was built by soldiers in memorial of those killed in World War One. In total, the road stretches 243 kilometres (151 miles) along the south-eastern coast of Australia to connect the two towns Torquay and Allansford.

Head to the beach

Perth’s beaches are a major draw for visitors and local residents, especially given the favourable weather.

One of the region’s most famous is Cottesloe Beach, which has amazing white sand and a number of cafes and bars. is Perth’s most iconic beach.

Another alternative is Cable Beach, which has more than 20km of sand and is often regarded as one of the most stunning beaches in the world.

Fremantle Prison

Fremantle Prison is the only World Heritage Listed Building in Western Australia. The site served as a prison for nearly 140 years and is now a major tourist attraction. Visitors enjoy the tours that give an insight into what it was like to be imprisoned in the gaol. For the brave, there are even nighttime tours conducted by torch light, or you can be treated to a walk through the system of tunnels under the prison itself.

Perth Zoo

Perth Zoo can be found in the south of the region and is a great day for families with children. Opened in 1898, the zoo plays an important role in protecting Australia’s varied wildlife.

More than 1,000 animals, consisting of more than 170 species, live in the zoo, which is around 41 hectares in size.

The zoo is open every day of the year from 9am to 5pm.
