Where to go

Cairns Airport is a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most incredible natural wonders. You can use your car to get all of your snorkelling and scuba gear to the beach, where you can enjoy all that the coast has to offer.

Nearby Cairns Airport

If you prefer to stay on land, you can head across on Route 1 to the Kuranda State Forest, where you can explore the rainforest, a contrast to much of Australia’s arid environment. You could also visit the Cairns Botanic Gardens, where you can see the beautiful flowers and trees.

Longer drives

If you like a long drive, you’re in the right country. With such a vast area, there is a good chance that what you want to see is many miles away. You could head up State Route 44 to Cape Tribulation, a remote headland in the Daintree National Park and the Wet Tropics World Heritage area.

Eating and drinking

Like the major Australian coastal cities of Sydney and Perth, Cairns offers plenty of culinary choice. You can try the seafood and then end your night downtown, where the vibrant nightlife will keep you up past your usual bedtime.

Things to do

You can take a walk down Esplanade Boardwalk, a beautiful stretch of foreshore. From there, you can also take a dip in the Cairns Esplanade Swimming Lagoon. You should also make sure you visit the beach and try some of the watersports on offer.

Sightseeing

The Atherton Tablelands is a wonderful wildlife area, with a lot to offer. You can see the gorgeous lakes, the Millaa Millaa falls and the Atherton Lookout. If golf is your preferred way of relaxing, you can play it there too. If you’d rather spend your time in the city, you should stop by St Monica’s Cathedral, a stunning modern cathedral.
