Birmingham is the largest city in the West Midlands in England, and is often considered the nation's second city, after London.

Hiring a car means that you can explore not only this great city, but also the surrounding areas.

The main roads surrounding Birmingham are the M6 motorway, which runs from the outskirts of Manchester down to Rugby where it joins the M1, and the M5, beginning just north of Birmingham and going on to Exeter, in the south of England.

Situated in the midlands, Birmingham is perfectly placed if you want to get out and see more of what England has to offer.

Just 40 minutes away along the M6 is Rugby, a stunning market town on the River Avon. The town is hugely popular due to it being the birthplace of the popular game of rugby, and you can enjoy many museums and art galleries here, including the Webb Ellis Rugby Football Museum and Rugby Art Gallery and Museum.

Alternatively, just under an hour along the M6 and M69 is Leicester. The most popular attraction is undoubtedly the National Space Centre, which boasts the UK's largest planetarium, as well as a 3D simulator experience and iconic 42-metre high rocket tower.

Your hire car means that you can get out and explore further afield if you wish.

Just over two hours south of Birmingham down the M40 is London. If you head to the centre of the city, you can see the city's most well-known attractions, such as the London Eye, Buckingham Palace and Covent Garden. Alternatively, head to the east end and explore the markets of Brick Lane and Shoreditch.

For something a bit quieter, drive an hour and a half north of Birmingham along the A41 to reach Chester, a historic city in the north of England. Here you can explore the cobbled streets, see the traditional buildings that still stand and pay a visit to one of the many tea rooms, cafes, galleries and independent shops.
