Known as eThekweni in Zulu, Durban has a lot to offer, even if the city is often overlooked for other locations in this region of the country. As well as everything you would expect from a city, Durban also has a stunning waterfront promenade that offers views. You'll also find an explosion of Indian culture throughout the city that is worth embracing.

Here you'll find the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium, which was where the 2010 World Cup took place. Little more than an hour away via the N2 and N3 is the city of Pietermaritzburg. Here you'll find a huge range of historic and grand buildings, many of which are now fantastic museums. It also has a brilliant mix of cultures that makes Pietermaritzburg so interesting and dynamic.

Things to do
To enjoy more of the varied wildlife in Durban, take a trip to the Umgeni River Bird Park. Covering 3.5 hectares of land, there are more than 800 birds to see and learn about, some of which you can get up close to.
For a chance to soak up the sun, head to North Beach. Here you can sunbathe, swim and try your hand at surfing, while restaurants and shops are nearby.
Durban is home to the biggest Hare Krishna temple in the southern hemisphere, the Temple of Understanding. The building has an unusual design that is incredibly photogenic. You'll also find a fantastic vegetarian restaurant on site.
The Durban Botanic Gardens are also worth a visit, especially as it houses some rare species of plant. You may be lucky enough to visit when one of the concerts is happening in the gardens.
