“The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”
Where to go
One of the first places you’ll want to explore with your hire car Denpasar, the island’s capital. Check out the Bali Museum to see traditional artefacts from over the centuries, before heading to Sanur Beach for a relaxed vibe. The Pura Blanjong Temple is also a good introduction to the religious culture of Bali and is home to a stone pillar featuring an inscription from the 10th century.
Drive on the left-hand side in Bali and overtake on the right. Be aware of locals who may be driving fast or unpredictably, but always keep to the speed limit. Do not drink and drive or use your mobile phone while you’re behind the wheel. The Mandara toll road is the most significant piece of vehicle infrastructure in Bali and connects Denpasar to other parts of the island across the Gulf of Benoa.
With your hire car, you will be able to explore the whole of Bali and even neighbouring Java if you so wish. One place to include on your itinerary is Ubud, which is home to many cultural attractions, including museums, temples, gardens and parks. If your main aim of your trip to Bali is to chill out at the beach, then Kuta should be your destination of choice.
Eating and drinking
Indonesian food is some of the most popular to come out of Asia and there are plenty of dishes you should try during your trip to Bali. Nasi goreng is often considered the national dish and this combination of rice, spices, egg, meat and vegetables certainly hits the spot. Satay is another favourite and consists of marinated meat that is skewered and cooked on the barbecue.
Things to do
Being an island, a lot of the things to do on Bali are focused on the sea. It’s a great opportunity to learn to surf or catch some waves if you have already mastered the sport, with destinations such as Balangan being the perfect spot. Another memorable activity is spotting the dolphins at Lovina, with plenty of boats available to take you out to see them.
Pura Tanah Lot was built on a rock formation as its foundation and is one of seven temples that form a circle in the southwest of the island. Visiting at low tide gives you the chance to appear to be walking on water, as you stride across to reach it. Mount Batur is an ever-present sight in eastern Bali and this active volcano is just waiting to be climbed.
