Where to go

Biarritz is a city of two apparently opposing cultures that actually fit well together. That is as a destination for the wealthy and an idyllic surf spot. Either way, the seafront is the focus of Biarritz and it’s fun to take a look at the stunning residences of the rich and famous, as well as exploring the Old Port.

Nearby Biarritz

Less than 20 minutes’ drive from Biarritz is the city of Bayonne, which is jam-packed with interesting old buildings and a real sense of history. Do not restrict your explorations with your hire car just to France, however, as the city of San Sebastian in Spain is less than an hour’s drive away along toll roads. It is a foodie paradise situated on a beautiful wide bay.

Longer drives

Further afield, there’s large sections of France and Spain that would can easily get to in your hire car from Biarritz. Three and a half hours away is Toulouse, which is known as The Pink City, due to its buildings having been constructed out of terracotta bricks. Alternatively, head to Bilbao in Spain to see the iconic Guggenheim Museum.

Eating and drinking

French cuisine is of course world famous, but there are specific dishes and styles that have been embraced in the Basque country. Be sure to enjoy some Bayonne cured ham during your time in Biarritz, as well as some delicious cider, once the car is parked up for the night. Artichokes are another regional delicacy and prepared in a variety of interesting and delicious ways.

Things to do

Surfing may well be top of your list in Biarritz, but if you’d prefer not to get your feet wet, simply enjoy a stroll along the Grande Plage, taking in the likes of the Hotel du Palais and Casino Barriere. This will immerse you in the atmosphere of Biarritz’s golden age. The local aquarium, housed within a 1930s art deco building is also well worth a visit.

Sightseeing

You’ll automatically fall over interesting sights as you explore Biarritz, but there are some worth specifically seeking out. Climb the 248 steps to the top of Biarritz Lighthouse, which was constructed in 1834, and enjoy the views out along the coast. Step inside Napoleon and Eugenie’s private chapel to see a stunning painting of the Virgin Mary.
