Digital Detox - Top Places to Disconnect in the UK

August 2018

Today’s reality means we live in a hyperconnected world with pressure to always be “on”. Keeping on top of e-mails, social media and news is our daily routine. Due to this modern day stress, almost half the population of the UK are worried by the effect of too much screen time.

The truth is that we can all really use some Digital Detox time.

What is a Digital Detox?

According to the Oxford Dictionary, a Digital Detox is “a period of time during which a person refrains from using electronic devices such as smartphones or computers, regarded as an opportunity to reduce stress or focus on social interaction in the physical world”.

Impact of technology on our holidays

It’s astonishing that 43% of adults in the UK are planning a “digital detox” to unplug on their next holiday.

What do experts say about Digital Detox?

We spoke to Psychology of Technology expert, Dr Larry Rosen, who explains just why digital detoxing helps us to reconnect with those we love in person, rather than on screen. “Those connected electronically on social media and other forms of communication get more anxious if they’re not allowed to check in on their phones – especially young people. This increasing reliance on screen time has affected the biochemistry of our brains.

“It’s important to remember that a holiday is a different environment – we don’t require the same tools that we do in our everyday lives. Using our smartphones sparingly during our staycation – perhaps only once or twice a day – can help us appreciate what we’re doing and who we’re with, rather than what’s on our smartphone.”

Best places in the UK for a Digital Detox

This year, the UK has been named “staycation nation” with over half of Brits (57%) staying put this summer, choosing to remain in the country for the holidays. We’ve created this digital detox map of the UK to show the best 15 places to unplug this summer. The countryside of Wales, Scotland, Cornwall and Devon are all great staycation destinations, as are the Peak District and the Lake District.

Our Digital Detox map of the UK will help you to plan your escape of the daily grind. The locations marked as ‘Unplug here’ are areas with the weakest connection meaning you can really disconnect and have a quality time with your family and friends.

How to unplug

Take back your time
Start by monitoring the amount of time you spend on your phone. Ironically, there are several leading apps you can use to do this. Once you know how much time you actually spend checking social media, e-mails and messages, you'll be able to gradually cut down.

Go old school
It's time to dust off your ancient devices like your alarm clock, watch and camera so that you’re not constantly reaching for your phone.

No notifications
Simply turn off notifications so you're not distracted by unnecessary messages or alerts.

Prioritise
Set aside 1 hour only to check email and social media. Stop yourself after that hour is complete.

Travel
Organise a weekend getaway or a “staycation” somewhere with no or limited connectivity. Even the more remote spots in the UK are easily accessible by car during your staycation this summer. If you haven’t got your own car, you can hire one on HolidayAutos.com.

Talk!
Let your friends and family know that you need a break from distractions and that you will be taking time away from your phone. On top of that, organise some real face time and spend time with your loved ones.
