Car hire at Krakow Airport

Krakow Airport (KRK) or John Paul II Airport as it is formally known, is the international hub for the city of the same name in Poland. Getting around in your hire car will be simple, with the airport lying a short half-an-hour drive from the city centre via the A4.

What I need to know

There are many car rental companies operating out of Krakow Airport, meaning you’ll have lots of choice. Where to pick up my car

Most of the car hire firms at Krakow Airport offer a meet and greet service, meaning a member of staff will escort you to where you need to pick up your vehicle. A smaller number have in-terminal pick-up, so be sure to opt for one of those if it is important to you. Alternatively, there are also companies that include a free shuttle bus to get to your car.

Where to go

Explore Krakow in your hire car and see what the different areas of the city have to offer. Two such districts – Old Town and Kazimierz – are inscribed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Heritage list. This is a testament to the fascinating things to see in these parts of the city.

Nearby Krakow Airport

As well as the city of Krakow, there are several other places within an easy distance of the airport that are worth visiting. Olkusz is known as Silver Town, due to the mining that once went on there, but another prominent feature is the well-preserved ruins of the 15th-century walls that were built around its perimeter.

Longer drives

Poland’s capital, Warsaw is just a four-hour drive away, but as Krakow Airport is located in the south of the country, you may wish to explore cities across the borders with Slovakia or the Czech Republic that are closer. Kosice, for example, has a beautiful Old Town and a distinctive local cocktail called Kosice gold.

Eating and drinking

Many of the world’s cuisines are represented in the restaurants of Krakow, but you should really try some Polish specialities during your stay. Top of the list should be a type of dumpling known as pierogi. Served either savoury or sweet, they are filled with a variety of ingredients, including meat and sauerkraut or seasonal berries.

Things to do

One of the most fascinating things to do in Krakow is to visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine. As well as having been a working mine, the underground network is also home to an intricately carved chapel and a museum. Above ground, a trumpet call is performed from the watchtower of St Mary’s Church every hour. It comes to an abrupt end to represent the moment when a bugler playing a warning call during the Mongol invasion was shot dead.

Sightseeing

Just standing in the middle of the Main Square in Krakow presents plenty of sights before your eyes. It is surrounded by palaces and churches, each exemplifying their own styles. Wawel Castle is also well worth a visit, as the views from this 14th-century hilltop fortification add an extra dimension to the experience.
