Aphrodite is believed to have landed at Paphos after rising from the sea, so several monuments to the Greek goddess can be found nearby. A 25-minute journey will also take you to the Roman remains of Kato Paphos Archaeological Park.

Longer drives

Cyprus capital Nicosia (1 hour, 35 minutes from Paphos Airport) is home to Buyuk Han, the island's largest caravanserai (travellers' inn), as well as its oldest museum. Drive 90 minutes to Paphos Forest for stunning scenic walks or head to party town Ayia Napa (1 hour, 45 minutes away) for a livelier atmosphere.

Eating and drinking

Traditional Cypriot cuisine is very similar to that of Greece, with souvlaki (kebabs usually made from pork or lamb), kleftiko (a slow-cooked stew made from meat and vegetables) and stuffed vine leaves all worth trying during your visit, accompanied by a glass of the local wine.

Things to do

The nearby Tombs of the Kings are steeped in history and legend, providing a glimpse into the burial rituals of the nobility in around 312 BC. Meanwhile, the House of Dionysos is an authentic Roman villa that has undergone restoration over the years to protect the many mesmerising mosaics that depict the Greek god of wine Dionysus, dating from the second century AD.

Sightseeing

Paphos is home to sandy beaches and clear blue waters, making it ideal for a spot of snorkelling. Nearby Coral Bay features several sea caves that are crying out to be explored. Who knows what kind of sea life and underwater flora and fauna you'll get to see? A little further along the coast, you'll come to Lighthouse Beach, providing even more glorious ocean views.
