Car hire in Berlin

Hiring a car in Berlin

Managing to be both gritty and chic at once without breaking stride, Berlin is truly a city that has grown into its status as a vastly popular tourist destination in recent years, a reputation which it now relishes in, with vibrant colours, a perfect atmosphere and some of the best eating and drinking on the continent, making it the perfect place for visitors.

Whether you've chose to come to Berlin to learn more about the colourful past of the German nation, or because you want to see how modern Germany ticks, there will be something here to take your fancy. From the grittier side of the political buildings and structures that saw so many happenings in the early 20th century, to the more modern clubs, bars and galleries that make Berlin such a vibrant place these days, there's something for everyone here, no matter your age or tastes.

What you need to know

Many of the places you'll want to see when you come to Berlin are in compact little areas that are perfect for walking or cycling, a favourite way to get around, but in order to make sure you see everything you could want to when you're in the city, there will be nothing that quite compares to driving. It allows you to get from place to place with ease to ensure that you never miss anything and see as much of Berlin as possible when you're there on holiday.

Before setting off for Berlin, it's always the best idea to book yourself car hire. This allows you the chance to compare prices from some of the very best companies around. At Holiday Autos, we work with more than 1,500 providers, so you know that not only are you getting the best deals, but also the best range of cars from the top providers, so you can rest assured you are getting both a car and a price that suits you perfectly.

Where to pick up your car

If you're flying into Berlin, you'll be arriving at one of two airports, and it's important to know where you need to pick up your car, regardless of which of these you arrive at. If you're flying into Berlin Schonefeld Airport (SFX), you will find all the car hire companies grouped together in a convenient rental centre located outside of Terminal A. From there, it's just a short walk to the car park where you can collect your vehicle and get on with hitting the road.

For those arriving at Berlin Tegal Airport, car hire desks are just as conveniently located, between the entrance to Terminal E and Car Park P2, where you will be able to pick up the keys and head directly to your car, setting off on your adventure to Berlin and beyond within a matter of minutes.

Where to go

Once you've collected all of the relevant documents and got your car hire sorted, all that remains is to choose what you want to do in and around Berlin, whether you're looking to party with the locals or enjoy the history that makes the city so popular.

Nearby Berlin

Car hire in Berlin means you can see so much of the surrounding areas, and thankfully there are a plentiful supply of great places to drive to around the city. Why not head, for example, to Konzentrationslager Sachsenhausen, just around 20km north of the city? For those with an interest in the history of Berlin, this serves as a chilling reminder of how World War II and the Nazi regime changed this country forever, and it is a particularly poignant place to visit for anyone looking to take a trip to Berlin.

For something a little more beautiful and taking the mind off some of the horrors linked to the city, you can also take the relatively short drive to Park Sanssouci, where you can take a walk through some perfect green spaces, taking in garden terraces, greenhouses and some terrifically built structures.

Longer drives

Of course, hiring a car from Holiday Autos also means that you unlock the ability to see things further afield as well, and getting yourself out of Berlin means you can see more of what Germany has to offer. Why not head off to Spreewald Nature Reserve, for example? Here, you will be able to see more than 18,000 different plant and animal species in what is a truly wonderful surrounding, and all just over an hour from the city of Berlin itself.

A little further away from Berlin will be Braunlage Wurmberg Ski Resort. Germany may not be as well known as France and Switzerland for its ski resorts, but anyone who's been to Berlin in winter will tell you how cold it can get. Make the most of the weather if you visit in winter with a trip to this gorgeous resort, located only three hours from Berlin by car.

Top attractions to visit in Berlin

When you come to Berlin, there's so much to see and do. Choose whatever meets your tastes best and rest assured that Holiday Autos can help you see it all with your convenient car hire.

Brandenburg Gate

Originally built as a sign of peace, the Brandenburg Gate would later become one of the most important parts of the Berlin Wall, acting as the crossing point between East and West Germany. Even as the wall has been knocked down, the Gate still stands to this day, and anyone with a passing interest in history is advised to visit for a poignant look at what war brought to Germany in the 20th century.

Parliament building

Home to German politics since the 1800s, this Reichstag building is particularly important in a historical sense because of its position as the centre of the discussions that led to both world wars. As well as seeing history in action here, though, it's well worth heading up into the glass dome of the roof, from where you get an excellent unobstructed view of the whole of Berlin.

Berlin Wall

No trip to Germany and Berlin in particular could bypass the Berlin Wall, perhaps the most poignant symbol of war that has ever been built. The structure split Germany in half for more than 40 post-war years, and even though it has since been torn down, parts of the concrete structure still stand to this day, and the course is marked out by cobbled stones, serving as a permanent reminder of the evils war can bring to any city.
